Royal Red Honeycrisp is a sport mutation of standard Honeycrisp with excellent bright red overcolour in Summerland. This variety is protected in Canada under PBR with a per tree royalty attached to it. Nurseries must be licensed to propagate this variety. Speak with a horticulturalist to ensure site suitability and use caution when planting this variety due to the numerous challenges associated with producing Honeycrisp. Propagation material will be limited for the first couple years as it is bulked up to commercial levels.
There are currently a number of red strains available in the US, with several becoming available in Canada shortly as propagative material becomes available and new sports are licensed to nurseries.
